Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) Software: How TEKLA and PKPM Ensure Precision

Pre-engineered buildings are only as accurate as the model behind them. Bolted frames leave no room for a field-fabrication culture: if a bolt hole is 15 mm out of position, the plate does not fit and the site stops. This is why serious PEB manufacturers build every project in a 3D model before fabrication — and why buyers should ask which software is used and whether the model is available to them.

What TEKLA Structures Does for a Project

TEKLA is a BIM authoring platform specialised for steel. In a typical PEB workflow it delivers:

  • A full 3D model of every member and connection: columns, rafters, purlins, bracing, crane beams, end wall framing, base plates and all bolt groups, in real geometry rather than lines.
  • Clash detection: clashes between steel, cladding fixing points, doors, and MEP routes are found in the model rather than on site.
  • Automated shop drawings: assembly and single-part drawings with dimensions, weld symbols, bolt lists and mark numbers generated from the model, which reduces drafting errors dramatically.
  • CNC output: drilling and cutting data exported directly to production machinery, so plate position on the drawing is plate position on the steel.
  • Accurate bill of materials: tonnage by member type, bolt and fastener counts, coating area — all derived from the model, which makes quotations and deliveries verifiable.
  • Erection drawings: sequence and mark-based layout plans used on site, so every part arrives already identified.

Where PKPM Fits

PKPM is the dominant structural analysis and design suite in China, widely used for code-based calculation of steel frames, especially to Chinese standards and for seismic analysis. In practice, Chinese factories run a two-tool workflow: PKPM (with SATWE or the steel module) for analysis and code compliance, and TEKLA for detailing and production output. Analysis governs section sizes; detailing governs whether the building can be assembled.

For export projects, the analysis package may additionally be verified with international software such as SAP2000, ETABS or STAAD.Pro to satisfy a foreign engineer of record. A competent manufacturer should be able to state which analysis route was used and provide the calculation report.

Why This Matters to a Buyer on the Other Side of the World

  1. Fit first time: bolted frames built from a coordinated model assemble faster and with fewer site modifications, which is critical when your installation crew has limited fabrication capability.
  2. No disappearing tonnage: a model-derived bill of materials lets you verify the steel weight you are paying for against the delivered packing list.
  3. Change control: a revision in the model propagates to drawings and machine data, so late design changes do not create mismatched parts.
  4. Verification: an independent engineer can review the model or clash report rather than travelling to the factory.
  5. Future expansion: an as-built model makes it straightforward to extend the building, add a crane or mount rooftop PV.

Documents to Request With Your Quotation

  • Structural calculation report referencing your specified design code and load parameters.
  • General arrangement (GA) drawings with dimensions, eave height, span and column grid.
  • Connection details, including a typical bolt schedule.
  • Bill of materials by category with total tonnage.
  • Erection drawing with member marks.
  • Model or drawing file export (DWG/IFC) if you employ your own engineer.
  • Coating specification and the surface preparation standard used.

Precision Is Not a Premium Feature

In an export PEB project the cost of one mis-drilled connection is not the steel — it is the idle crane, the stopped crew and the air-freighted replacement. Modelling and detailing discipline is the cheapest insurance available, and it is the reason a well-run factory can offer fixed installation schedules rather than optimistic estimates.
