Sustainable Construction: Why Steel is the Key to LEED/BREEAM Certification
Steel is the most recycled structural material on earth. Around 90% of structural steel scrap is recovered and recycled, and electric-arc-furnace (EAF) production of structural sections typically carries embodied carbon 40–60% lower per tonne than the primary blast-furnace route. For projects pursuing LEED v4.1 or BREEAM, those numbers translate directly into certification points.
Where Steel Earns Credits
1. Building life-cycle impact reduction
LEED rewards projects that reuse existing structures and reduce material quantities. A steel frame that allows reuse of an existing foundation, or a design optimized by software to remove excess tonnage, contributes to both the material and waste categories. BREEAM has comparable credits under Mat 01 and Mat 02.
2. Building product disclosure and optimization (LEED MRc2–4)
Points are awarded for sourcing at least 20 permanently installed products from manufacturers with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and for products with verified life-cycle reporting. Steel producers publish industry-average and product-specific EPDs, and a factory that supplies EPD documentation in the submittal package supports this credit directly.
3. Recycled content (MRc1 / BREEAM Wst)
Steel from an EAF mill may contain 90%+ recycled content, split between pre-consumer and post-consumer fractions. The mill certificate and the producer’s declaration provide the evidence.
4. Construction and demolition waste
Prefabricated steel is cut, drilled and prepared in the factory. Site waste for a steel building is typically 1–3% versus 10–15% for in-situ concrete construction. BREEAM rewards documented diversion-from-landfill rates.
5. Energy and atmosphere
An insulated steel envelope with high-performance panel systems, airtight detailing and insulated doors reduces operational energy. Combine with rooftop PV and daylighting — two areas where steel roofs excel — and the energy credits become achievable in tandem with the material credits.
6. Design for disassembly and future reuse
Bolted connections allow a steel frame to be taken apart and rebuilt, which supports circular-economy credits that concrete and masonry structures cannot easily claim. Document the bolted connection strategy in the submittal package.
Practical LEED/BREEAM Documentation From a Steel Fabricator
- Mill test certificates with heat numbers and steel grade, traceable to each member mark.
- Recycled content declaration (pre- and post-consumer percentages) per steel batch.
- EPD for the primary steel sections and for the cladding and insulation panels.
- Factory quality and environmental certifications — ISO 9001, ISO 14001, EN 1090 if applicable.
- Waste management records for the fabrication process.
- Regional materials distance statement (extraction, manufacture and delivery distances).
- Coating and finish data, including VOC content, for indoor air quality credits.
Design Decisions That Add Points
- Right-size the frame: ask for a tonnage optimization study; less steel means less embodied carbon and stronger life-cycle results.
- Specify high recycled-content steel where the local market allows, and require the declaration in the purchase order.
- Maximize daylight with skylights and roof monitors — steel long-span roofs are the cheapest place to add daylight in the whole building.
- Plan for PV from the start with a load allowance and standing seam roofing.
- Use a bolted frame and record it, supporting future disassembly credits.
- Choose low-VOC coatings for interior-exposed steel and reduce wet-trade finishes.
The Commercial Case
Certification is not only a compliance exercise. In many markets, institutional tenants and government projects now require a minimum green rating to lease or occupy. A steel structure that can be documented and optimized from day one is the fastest route to those credits, because prefabrication inherently reduces waste, weight, transport and on-site energy.
