Good packing and logistics planning prevent bent members, lost bolts, customs delays, and damaged panels. This guide walks through the complete shipping process: incoterms, packing methods, container loading, anti-corrosion protection, documents, and choosing between LCL and FCL.

Understanding the Shipping Process (FOB vs CIF vs DDP)

The first commercial decision is which incoterm (shipping responsibility) you agree on. It determines who arranges freight, who pays for it, and where risk transfers from seller to buyer.

FOB (Free On Board)

Under FOB, the seller delivers the goods on board the vessel at the port of loading. The buyer arranges and pays for ocean freight, insurance, and everything after that point. FOB often gives buyers the lowest freight price if they have their own forwarder, but it requires them to handle the logistics and customs at destination.

CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight)

With CIF, the seller pays for freight and marine insurance up to the destination port. This is convenient for buyers who do not want to coordinate shipping — one price covers the goods and transport to port. Note that risk still transfers to the buyer once goods are on board, and the buyer handles destination clearance and inland delivery.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)

DDP is the most complete service: the seller is responsible for freight, insurance, import duties, taxes, and delivery all the way to the buyer's site. You receive the building at your door. DDP simplifies everything for the buyer but typically carries a higher price because the seller absorbs all logistics risk and local charges.

Which should you choose? If you have a reliable local forwarder and want to control costs, FOB works well. If you prefer one fixed, worry-free price, CIF or DDP is better. Component Packing Methods (Steel Pallets, Bundling, Protection)

Steel structures ship as individual components, and each type needs its own packing treatment:

  • Main frame members (columns, beams, rafters): Bundled together with steel strapping, separated by wooden spacers to prevent chafing, and marked with the drawing or part number for easy identification on site.
  • Purlins and girts (C/Z sections): Nested and tied into compact bundles on steel pallets, often 1–2 tons per pallet, wrapped to keep them clean and straight.

  • Typical payload: A 40ft container can carry approximately 25–28 tons of cargo (subject to shipping line and road limits).
  • Purlins and secondary members: Packed tightly, around 20–25 tons can fit in a single 40ft container.
  • Main frames and panels together: A small warehouse or workshop building of around 300–600 m² typically ships in 1–3 containers, depending on design weight.
  • Fill space cleverly: Bolts and small parts in cartons fill the gaps between long members, and panels load on edge with protective packing to use the full height.

  • VCI (Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor) protection: Bolts and small steel parts are packed with VCI paper or pouches that release anti-corrosion vapor inside sealed packaging.
  • Desiccants: Silica gel bags inside wrapped bundles and cartons absorb moisture during the voyage.
  • Weatherproof wrapping: Bundles are wrapped in PE/tarpaulin with edge protection to block water and reduce condensation.
  • Fumigation-free materials: For destinations with strict wood packaging rules (like Australia, EU, and the US), use fumigation-free plywood or heat-treated timber with the IPPC stamp to avoid quarantine issues.

Shipping Documents You Need

International steel shipments require a standard document set. Missing or incorrect papers are the number one cause of customs delays and demurrage charges:

  • Packing list: Itemizes every bundle, pallet, and carton with weight, dimensions, and content, matching the marks on the goods.

  • FCL (Full Container Load): You use the entire container. It is faster, safer, and cheaper per ton because there is no consolidation handling. Choose FCL whenever your steel volume is close to a full container.
  • LCL (Less than Container Load): Your goods share a container with other shippers' cargo, consolidated at a warehouse near the port. LCL suits small buildings or prototype projects, but transit times are longer, there are extra handling fees, and your goods are handled more often — increasing damage risk.

As a rule, if your cargo occupies more than about half a container, FCL is almost always the better value. For very small loads, LCL avoids paying for unused space. Whichever you choose, insist on a proper loading plan and photographic records of your cargo before the container is sealed.
